Britain's New PM Rishi Sunak
The eldest of three siblings, Rishi Sunak was born on May 12, 1980, in Southampton to Yashvir and Usha Sunak, Hindu parents of Punjabi Indian origin who were born in Africa.
His father was born and raised in the British Protectorate of Kenya (present-day Kenya), while his mother was born in Tanganyika (which is present-day part of Tanzania). His grandparents were born in Punjab province, British India, and migrated from East Africa with their families to the UK in the 1960s.
Sunak went to Winchester College, a boys' independent boarding school, where he was head boy, and Stroud School, a prep school in Romsey, Hampshire. During his summer vacation, he worked as a waiter at a curry restaurant in Southampton. He earned a first-class degree in 2001 after studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Lincoln College in Oxford. He worked as an intern at the Conservative Campaign Headquarters while he was a student. In 2006, he gained an MBA from Stanford University, where he was a Fulbright scholar.
Sunak succeeded William Hague as the representative for Richmond in North Yorkshire in the House of Commons after the general election of 2015. Sunak voted to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum. In the 2018 cabinet shake-up, he was chosen to serve as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in Theresa May's second administration. He cast three yes votes for May's Brexit withdrawal deal. Sunak backed Boris Johnson's bid to lead the Conservative Party after May's resignation. Sunak was named Chief Secretary to the Treasury by Johnson after he was elected and given the position of Prime Minister. Following Sajid Javid's departure during the February 2020 cabinet change, Sunak took over as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
As Chancellor, Sunak played a significant role in the financial reaction of the government to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on the economy, including the Coronavirus Job Retention and Eat Out to Help Out programs. On July 5, 2022, he submitted his letter of resignation as chancellor, citing disagreements with Johnson on economic policies. Johnson resigned amid a cabinet crisis as a result of Sunak's departure and Javid's resignation as Health Secretary.
He ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party in July 2022 to succeed Johnson, but Liz Truss won the members' vote. Sunak won the October 2022 Conservative Party leadership election after Truss resigned after a crisis in the cabinet.
