Cab Drivers Announce a Looming Strike

Taxi drivers who use the digital ride-hailing services Uber and Bolt have called a strike that will begin the next week in protest of what they claim are excessive commission fees levied by the companies. According to the Organization of Online Drivers, beginning Monday, drivers will stop making reservations for passengers through the two applications. The National Transport and Safety Authority (Transport Network Companies, Owners, Drivers and Passengers) Regulations, 2022, which set a cap on the commissions the companies can charge at 18% per trip, were allegedly not implemented by Uber and Bolt, according to the drivers. Instead, Little Cab, Hava Cabs, and Yego Mobility will be used to make passenger reservations, according to their chairman Justin Nyaga. Charges for Bolt and Little Cab are correspondingly 20% and 15%. While Uber reduced the commission, according to Mr. Nyaga, it violated the rules by raising its booking fee from 4% to 11% each trip, effectively negating any benefit...

Ruiru Building Collapses

In Kiambu County's Ruiru Town, a five-story structure has collapsed. On Sunday afternoon, cracks were noticed on the building's pillars, and hours later, more than 100 tenants had been evacuated. Following complaints of the risk from the National Construction Authority (NCA) and the Ruiru OCPD, the rescue efforts were spearheaded on Sunday by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and firefighters. “Tenants can no longer stay in this house because its columns- which are supposed to support it have cracked. It cannot stand for long. If not for the neighbouring house that is supporting it, it could already be down,”  Wamatangi said while leading the rescue operations on Sunday. Within a week, Kiambu has experienced two building collapses, including this one. In Ruaka, Kiambu County, another five-story structure collapsed on November 17. Two occupants were killed when a nearby house was struck by a falling building.

World Cup chief reveals what will happen if people hold hands in Qatar

What will happen to people that hold hands throughout the competition has been disclosed by the Qatari World Cup's CEO. In the Gulf State, public expressions of affection will be permitted, according to Nasser Al Khater. "Look, we've always said that everybody is welcome here. All we ask is for people to be respectful of the culture.' he said. "Everybody is welcome here and everybody will feel safe when they come to Qatar. Everybody. But it's not me that I'm worried about. It's those ones that are messaging me. It's those people that aren't in the public eye that are scared to even be themselves and walk the streets." Many supporters are still hesitant about what they can and cannot do in the Middle East, despite Al Khater's assurances. Eight of the tournament's sites will not sell alcohol to spectators, it was declared yesterday. Additionally, there are still concerns regarding how the LGBT+ community will be received upon arriva...

Is Time Travel Real?

Image
People on Facebook have noticed a peculiar-looking man in a black-and-white 1940s photo where he seems to be using a gadget that is way too modern for the time period. According to the Sun, the mystery begins in Reykjavk, Iceland, in 1943, when the strange individual is observed around American soldiers who have been stationed during World War II. But this individual is not dressed in army fatigues. He sticks out instead because he is wearing a light-colored trench coat and is placing his hand close to his ear like a current cellphone user. It didn't take long for people on social media to weigh in and declare that the man must be a time traveler. The photo — first posted on the Icelandic Facebook group Gamlar ljósmyndir by user Kristjan Hoffmann in 2016 — was captioned: “One thing that draws attention to this  beautiful picture is that above the window, in the corner in the middle of the picture, a man is leaning and is on a cellphone.”   “I don’t know what to say, I don’t th...

Convicted MP out on Bail

The Court of Appeal has granted the Sirisia MP John Waluke a Sh10 million cash bail until his appeal against the 67-year jail term he was given for a Sh297 million fraud is heard and decided. Even though Waluke claimed the government owed him Sh300 million as a result of a 2004 maize supply contract that authorities allege was fraudulent. A three-judge bench that included Justices Asike Makhandia, Grace Ngenye, and Sankale ole Kantai decided the MP's imprisonment might result in the loss of his parliamentary seat and call for a by-election. "Once [Waluke] does not attend eight consecutive sittings, then he will automatically lose his seat. On that ground, we find the application for bail has merit and is allowed,” said Judge Ngenye, who read the ruling. The judges also offered him the chance to post a bail in the amount of Sh20 million. The bail conditions are the same as those that the High Court had set. “Assuming he is heard on appeal and he succeeds, he will not be able t...

Kenya Kwanza MPs Defy President's Orders

President William Ruto was disobeyed by Kenya Kwanza MPs last night when they chose to reject two of his top picks for the five party-backed candidates for the regional assembly, even though Azimio leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka won with significant margins. Kenya Kwanza chose Hassan Omar, a former Mombasa senator, former MP David Sankok, former Nandi woman representative Zipporah Kering, former senator Falhadha Iman Dekow, and former URP secretary-general Fred Muteti as their preferred lineup in a meeting presided over by President Ruto on Wednesday in State House.  Mt. Kenya MPs felt that at least one of their own deserved a place in the regional parliament and were unhappy with the final five candidates chosen at State House. The President publicly endorsing the five, according to some MPs in the Kenya Kwanza camp, was also inappropriate since it upset the coalition. “Within the coalition, they should have known the favourite candidate; endorsing the five in public mea...

Qatari Authorities Ban Sale of Alcohol in Stadiums

Following last-minute negotiations, World Cup organizers in Qatar have prohibited the selling of alcohol near stadiums, FIFA reported on Friday. FIFA and Qatari organizers were involved in late negotiations over whether beer will be offered at the stadiums during the tournament, which starts on Sunday. FIFA said in a statement: "Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing the sales points of beer from Qatar's FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters." While fans can buy alcohol at the authorized fan zones throughout the competition, however, the availability of beer at the actual games has generated some debate. At first glance, it seems as though FIFA and sponsors Budweiser reached an understanding to allow alcohol sales at the stadiums. After The New York Times first stated that the beer tents would be less n...

Quiver Lounge Management Statement Following Viral Video of Priest Blessing the Premises

Image
Image Courtesy of Quiver Lounge Allegations that the owners of the well-known city nightclub Quiver Lounge in Kenol, Murang'a County, invited a Catholic priest to dedicate the club have been refuted by the administration of the Quiver Lounge. General Manager Joseph Ng'ang'a of the lounge dismissed the allegations, saying that the men of cloth had come to the location to bless the mall as a whole rather than the establishment specifically. "Quiver Lounge happens to be one of the many businesses on which the new mall sits. The businesses there range from supermarkets to petrol stations, as you'd expect in any mall. Therefore, the mall owners, who also happen to be the proprietors of Nokras Hotels and Magunas supermarkets, simply sought the services of the Church in dedicating the mall to God. That's how Quiver Lounge was captured in viral videos while the priest did his thing. This was absolutely not a Quiver Lounge initiative, but that of the mall owners under w...

Image
After a government audit uncovered significant irregularities, at least five top managers of the struggling Metropolitan National Sacco Ltd resigned to make room for further investigations. The departures occurred a few days after the sacco's board was dismissed and a temporary committee installed last week as a result of dismal investigation results commissioned by Commissioner of Co-operatives David Obonyo in April.
