Former MCA jailed over fake academic papers


A former Member of County Assembly (MCA) who falsified academic credentials was sentenced to four years in prison.

The Kiamwangi MCA For forging his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate, Robert Kibe Githongo was given a sentence of four years in prison or an Sh500,000 fine.

At the Milimani Anti-Corruption court, Senior Principal Magistrate Hon Peter Ooko condemned Githongo to his first offense of violating Section 347(a) of the Penal Code, with the possibility of paying a Sh500,000 fine.


“Githongo was charged with making a false document namely KSCE S/No .625123 purporting it to be a genuine certificate issued by Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC). For this count, the convict is to serve two years in jail or default pay a fine of Sh250,000,” the court documents read in part.


The former lawmaker was also accused of uttering a fraudulent document in violation of Penal Code section 353, which carries a comparable penalties.

According to the charge sheet, on December 29, 2014, the one-term MCA at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) presented the university with a fake document that was presented as a real certificate issued by KNEC.

Pauline Otieno and Liliam Ochieng, two Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation employees who were charged with falsifying academic credentials in order to obtain employment, were imprisoned by the same court in July 2022.
