Kiira Motors: Pioneering Sustainable Mobility in Africa

Kiira Motors, a Uganda-based automotive manufacturer, achieved several milestones in the realm of sustainable transportation. Their first electric car hit the roads in 2011, marking a significant stride as Africa's pioneering electric vehicle. Following this success, Kiira Motors unveiled Africa's premier hybrid car in 2014, showcasing the company's commitment to innovation and environmental consciousness. In 2016, they further solidified their reputation by introducing the continent's inaugural solar-powered/electric bus, amplifying the shift towards clean energy mobility.
Notably, Kiira Motors' electric cars offer an impressive range of at least 250 kilometers before necessitating a recharge, demonstrating their dedication to practical and efficient transportation solutions. This capability addresses concerns about range anxiety, making electric vehicles a viable option for everyday use in Uganda and beyond.
Ownership of Kiira Motors reflects a strategic collaboration between the Ugandan government and Makerere University, with the former holding a majority stake of 96%, underscoring the state's support for local innovation and industrial development. Makerere University's minority ownership of 4% highlights the importance of academic institutions in fostering technological advancements and contributing to national progress. Through these endeavors, Kiira Motors emerges as a beacon of sustainable mobility in Africa, driving forward the continent's transition towards a greener and more sustainable future.
