Equity appoint Samuel Kirubi as new Group Chief Operating Officer

Samuel Kirubi, a longtime managing director of Equity Bank Uganda, has been appointed by Equity Group as its Group Chief Operating Officer (GCOO). Prior to joining Equity Bank in 2001, Mr. Kirubi worked as Equity Bank South Sudan's chief operations officer from 2009 to 2001.

Before being transferred to Equity Bank's Uganda subsidiary in the same role in 2015, he was first promoted to the post of funding managing director of Equity Bank South Sudan.

Third-most profitable Equity subsidiary after Kenya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he guided the subsidiary from being in the red to becoming the fifth-most profitable bank in Uganda (DRC). Anthony Kituka, the current Executive Director, has been named the new Managing Director of Equity Bank Uganda.

The lender stated in a statement that Mr. Kirubi will be in charge of improving the bank's ability to carry out its strategy by coordinating people, systems, processes, commercial activity, and business risk with customers' ambitions.

In order to "deliver globally benchmarked exceptional banking services and solutions and leverage on technology to drive efficiency and seamless customer experience characterized by ease and convenience of lifestyle," it was stated that the new GCOO will collaborate with all the banking subsidiaries.

“The Board has expressed confidence in Mr Kirubi’s capability, experience and deep knowledge of the transition culture in taking up this responsibility at a critical time of the bank’s growth and expansion,” said Equity Group Chief Executive James Mwangi on the appointment.

Speaking about his hiring, Mr. Kirubi claimed that the Equity Group's extensive expertise had appropriately equipped him for his new position.

“I am delighted and humbled at the opportunity afforded to me by the board to steer the Group’s operations across the Group. My tour of duty in South Sudan where I was in charge of Operations, then moved to Equity Bank Rwanda as the first Managing Director before being assigned to turn around Equity Bank Uganda has indeed prepared me for the role of Group Chief Operating Officer. My commitment to the Board is that I will uphold their expectations and work with my colleagues in taking Equity to the next level as we focus our eyes to making Equity the home of 100 million customers.”  said Mr Kirubi.

He graduated from Egerton University with a BA in Economics and Statistics and Moi University's Master of Business Administration program. Additionally, he is an Advanced Management Program graduate of Strathmore IESE Business School, (Barcelona Spain).
