Where Exactly Did Christmas Originate from?

Image
Christmas, which is observed on December 25, is a holy religious event as well as a global cultural and economic event. People have been celebrating it with customs and rituals that are both religious and secular in nature for two millennia now. Christmas Day is marked by Christians as the anniversary of the birth of their spiritual figurehead, Jesus of Nazareth, whose teachings serve as the foundation of their faith. Popular traditions include gifting, erecting and decorating Christmas trees, going to church, gathering with loved ones for feasts, and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus. The origins of Christmas stem from both the pagan and Roman cultures. The Romans actually celebrated two holidays in the month of December. The first was Saturnalia, which was a two-week festival honoring their god of agriculture Saturn. On December 25th, they celebrated the birth of Mithra, their sun god. Both celebrations were raucous, drunken parties. In order to dispel the darkness, the pagan cultu...

Cab Drivers Announce a Looming Strike

Taxi drivers who use the digital ride-hailing services Uber and Bolt have called a strike that will begin the next week in protest of what they claim are excessive commission fees levied by the companies. According to the Organization of Online Drivers, beginning Monday, drivers will stop making reservations for passengers through the two applications. The National Transport and Safety Authority (Transport Network Companies, Owners, Drivers and Passengers) Regulations, 2022, which set a cap on the commissions the companies can charge at 18% per trip, were allegedly not implemented by Uber and Bolt, according to the drivers. Instead, Little Cab, Hava Cabs, and Yego Mobility will be used to make passenger reservations, according to their chairman Justin Nyaga. Charges for Bolt and Little Cab are correspondingly 20% and 15%. While Uber reduced the commission, according to Mr. Nyaga, it violated the rules by raising its booking fee from 4% to 11% each trip, effectively negating any benefit...

Ruiru Building Collapses

In Kiambu County's Ruiru Town, a five-story structure has collapsed. On Sunday afternoon, cracks were noticed on the building's pillars, and hours later, more than 100 tenants had been evacuated. Following complaints of the risk from the National Construction Authority (NCA) and the Ruiru OCPD, the rescue efforts were spearheaded on Sunday by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and firefighters. “Tenants can no longer stay in this house because its columns- which are supposed to support it have cracked. It cannot stand for long. If not for the neighbouring house that is supporting it, it could already be down,”  Wamatangi said while leading the rescue operations on Sunday. Within a week, Kiambu has experienced two building collapses, including this one. In Ruaka, Kiambu County, another five-story structure collapsed on November 17. Two occupants were killed when a nearby house was struck by a falling building.

All we ask is for people to be respectful of the culture.' he said. "Everybody is welcome here and everybody will feel safe when they come to Qatar. Everybody. But it's not me that I'm worried about. It's those ones that are messaging me. It's those people that aren't in the public eye that are scared to even be themselves and walk the streets." Many supporters are still hesitant about what they can and cannot do in the Middle East, despite Al Khater's assurances. Gary Neville: Ronaldo's contract be terminated

The club ought to invalidate Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United contract, according to former United captain Gary Neville. Ronaldo recently declared he does not respect United manager Erik ten Hag and that he is being ejected from Old Trafford in an explosive interview with TalkTV. Since Ten Hag assumed management of United in May, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has played just a supporting role. After declining to replace an injured player in a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last month, Ronaldo received a warning. But his most recent action went even further, accusing the club's owners, the Glazer family, of having "no care" about the team's athletic achievement. "l don't think he wants a way back, . He wouldn't have done this interview if he wanted a way back.  He knew it would bring the headlines it has and be the end of his Manchester United career."  Neville told Sky Sports After returning to United from Juventus in August 2021...

Convicted MP out on Bail

The Court of Appeal has granted the Sirisia MP John Waluke a Sh10 million cash bail until his appeal against the 67-year jail term he was given for a Sh297 million fraud is heard and decided. Even though Waluke claimed the government owed him Sh300 million as a result of a 2004 maize supply contract that authorities allege was fraudulent. A three-judge bench that included Justices Asike Makhandia, Grace Ngenye, and Sankale ole Kantai decided the MP's imprisonment might result in the loss of his parliamentary seat and call for a by-election. "Once [Waluke] does not attend eight consecutive sittings, then he will automatically lose his seat. On that ground, we find the application for bail has merit and is allowed,” said Judge Ngenye, who read the ruling. The judges also offered him the chance to post a bail in the amount of Sh20 million. The bail conditions are the same as those that the High Court had set. “Assuming he is heard on appeal and he succeeds, he will not be able t...

Quiver Lounge Management Statement Following Viral Video of Priest Blessing the Premises

Image
Image Courtesy of Quiver Lounge Allegations that the owners of the well-known city nightclub Quiver Lounge in Kenol, Murang'a County, invited a Catholic priest to dedicate the club have been refuted by the administration of the Quiver Lounge. General Manager Joseph Ng'ang'a of the lounge dismissed the allegations, saying that the men of cloth had come to the location to bless the mall as a whole rather than the establishment specifically. "Quiver Lounge happens to be one of the many businesses on which the new mall sits. The businesses there range from supermarkets to petrol stations, as you'd expect in any mall. Therefore, the mall owners, who also happen to be the proprietors of Nokras Hotels and Magunas supermarkets, simply sought the services of the Church in dedicating the mall to God. That's how Quiver Lounge was captured in viral videos while the priest did his thing. This was absolutely not a Quiver Lounge initiative, but that of the mall owners under w...

Image
After a government audit uncovered significant irregularities, at least five top managers of the struggling Metropolitan National Sacco Ltd resigned to make room for further investigations. The departures occurred a few days after the sacco's board was dismissed and a temporary committee installed last week as a result of dismal investigation results commissioned by Commissioner of Co-operatives David Obonyo in April. According to sources, the caretaker committee would replace the managers with temporary office holders while stepping up its preparations for in-depth investigations into the earlier findings, which revealed irregularities like fictitious dividend payments, financial book manipulation, and erroneous lending. Some of the unethical practices that were revealed include Sh49 million in shady M-Pesa transfers by a single teller at the sacco's Nakuru branch and an overstatement of the institution's prime lending facility by more than Sh7 billion due to alleged disb...

Aisha's Reforms on Public Service

Image
If a promise made by the recently sworn-in Public Service CS, Aisha Jumwa, is fulfilled, government employees would be laughing all the way to the bank at the end of January 2023 Jumwa made a promise to raise all federal officials' pay within 100 days of taking office on Monday, October 31. She claimed that her decision was motivated by the general sense of demoralization prevalent throughout government agencies. The CS highlighted that many of the workers battled with basic needs like paying school fees and rent on their present pay by drawing an analogy to her own experiences growing up in a poor household. The CS further committed during her tour to extending Huduma Centers' operating hours, noting that the service was essential to many Kenyans. If implemented successfully, Huduma Centers' doors would be open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm as opposed to the nine-hour working day that currently runs from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Age Grade System Proposal

Image
Nalondo Community Rugby Club  It would be a dream come true for many rugby players to take part in a Rugby World Cup.  In Kenya, we continue to chase this dream,  time and time again falling short. We have put in time and resources towards this endeavour but are yet to see the desired results.  To make it to a Rugby World Cup, we need to put in place a working system that will give us the desired quality that will see us through to our first rugby world cup. This is my suggestion, We adopt an Age Grade system merged with a professional system that has been seen to yield good results and then merge it with our kenyan rugby.  This is how we go about it. We have the new education system, Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) already rolled out by the government. This forms the backbone of our Age Grade system.  The Primary grades form the base and introductory point of rugby to the nation's children, and with regular World Rugby coaching trainings organised by the...
