Lionesses Set for Uganda-hosted Tournament


The Rugby Africa Women's Pool B competition began on Tuesday, October 26, 2022, in Kampala. Head Coach Dennis Mwanja has announced the roster for the Lionesses team that will travel to Uganda.

In Nairobi on Wednesday morning during the team announcement, Mwanja remarked, “The girls are very excited, we are equally excited as a technical bench. We’ve put in a lot of work in preparing for this tournament. The team has been challenging to name because of the talent and competitiveness within the squad."

“We have four debutantes, namely Natasha Emali who was a late call up who has proved her worth. We also have Hesla Khisa, another late call up who alongside Natasha has brought a lot of impact and shown her hunger to play for the Lionesses. The other two debutantes are Phoebe Akinyi and Naomi Jelagat who only started playing rugby two years ago, ” he added.


"It's not going to be an easy trip," remarked Peruz Muyuka, the captain of the Lionesses. "We won't underrate any team when we travel there; instead, we'll take each game as it comes."


The team leaves for Kampala on October 27. Their first match is against Zambia on October 29. They then play their hosts, Uganda, on November 2nd.


The winner of this competition will advance to the Rugby Africa Cup, which serves as a qualifying event for the first World Women 15s WXV in 2023.
