Kenya's First Netflix Series Review

An ambitious event planner is pitted against a cunning businesswoman, whose family she is involved, as a mining corporation threatens to ruin her rural home, bringing the past and present into conflict. The chain of events that follow is characterized by love, treachery, and the ongoing conflict between tradition, capitalism, and modern society.

The debutant Kenyan Netflix series is called Country Queen. Taking place in modern-day Kenya, Country Queen is a family drama that chronicles the struggle of common Kenyans against a corporate force that threatens to destroy their lives and homes. The series focuses on the problems of land grabbing and exploitation and how these elements affect the lives and relationships of the major characters, their families, and their communities.

Country Queen, starring Melissa Kiplagat as Akisa, a woman from a peaceful upcountry village who now leads a luxurious but troubled existence in the city, was filmed in Nairobi, Machakos, and Murang'a Counties. Her troubled past and complicated connection to the wealthy and vicious Sibala family set off a series of incidents with far-reaching effects.

The series, which also features Melvin Alusa, Blessing Lung'aho, and Nini Wacera, is directed by Vincent Mbaya, Tosh Gitonga, and Brian Munene. It is a suspenseful story about what happens when the past and present intersect. A good watch for lovers of family drama.
